Yesterday, all my troubles seem so far away, these lyrics are kind of apt for Yesterday Origins. Mainly with how the game starts off when you’re thrown in jail for being the son of the devil.  What got me from the start of the game was that you’re thrown in jail by ‘The Inquisition’ – which from the name of the places as well as talk about battles in Portugal and the mention of Fuentenegra can only suggest this is the Spanish Inquisition, yet everyone speak in the most English dialects going. There is no sense of a Spanish accent or anything. It was the first thing I noticed in the game which I found to be quite poor. Where are the charming Spanish accents?

Visually the game looks OK. It’s nothing to shout about, but does the job with a lovely cartoon/comic style and one that reminds me of the Telltale games.

Yesterday Origins as well sets it story telling in a rather massive way for what is a ‘small’ game, and I don’t mean in terms of reputation, I mean in terms of how the game is built as a point and click adventure and the limited areas that the game gives. The games storytelling for such area and scale is absolutely massive with a lot of depth to it. The narrative spans over hundreds of years and the game does brilliantly to give you a good feel for each time period.

Much of the time is spent interacting with objects and getting clues together to get to the next part of the story, which a lot of time I found this to take a lot longer than I would have liked. Mainly due to the fact that I just couldn’t figure out what to do next, although I had an idea what to do, I just couldn’t piece the final part together and that is the joys with this game, it gets you thinking about what needs to be done next and a lot of the time, it’s not always as straight forward as you think.

There’s a kind of cause and effect type going on with your actions effecting what happens next, such as poking a pig with a heated pole end and getting a guard to throw his tankard at the pig, which you then have to do something with. I really liked that the game does make you think, a lot of games these days make it too easier to power through and not truly appreciate the game and the work that has gone into it. But another thing with this as well is that scenarios and things that might be in the background for other games are truly in the fore front for Yesterday Origins.

It’s not only collecting items in which helps you get a long in the story, there are plenty of conversations to be had within the game which help you learn about any objects nearby as well as frailties to the system or area you are in which you can exploit to escape or progress further.

The only issue I had with this is that all the conversations and searching/picking up items can get a bit laborious as it’s pretty much the same throughout and as you progress through the game you get a sense of what’s to come and what you have to do. Don’t get me wrong, it is good what the game is bringing to the table and if you’re a fan of solving puzzles you will probably enjoy playing this game, it was just the repetitiveness got to me.

Saying that though, there are times when after spending maybe 45-60 minutes looking around an area for a certain item or someway to get out of the predicament that you find yourself in, the game will make you feel as though you weren’t thorough enough with your searching, however it’s more that the game has tried to put you off the scent, where you think you have to do something with a certain item, the game will actually want you to do something else, but won’t tell you this as lots of information might be hidden in other places just waiting for you to discover.

The tutorial is good it helps you through the first part of the game, letting you know the ins and outs of the game, and what to do with your inventory, as this is where you will find the items you find and have to use within the game.

One thing that did annoy me was that there wasn’t any objectives displayed on the screen which was a real let down, but this didn’t seem like the type of game to hold your hand, however if you’re a fan of this type of game, then you will probably get loads of enjoyment out of it.

Yesterday Origins is a very good game and for those who love playing these type of games, I have a feeling that you would have a blast with it, however those who aren’t used to this type of puzzler then I have a feeling that it would be more of a nuisance than anything else.

I’m going to give Yesterday Origins a 6/10
