Slip into the role of an unusual HERO and find the last letter to restore hope in a merciless world.
Typoman is a 2D puzzle platformer. You slip into the role of a character made of letters, struggling to make your way through a dark and hostile world. Despite your small stature you have a powerful gift: You can craft words to alter your environment. But choose your words wisely. They can either be a blessing… or a curse!

Every once in a while an Indie game comes along that blows me away, last year it was Fru and early this year I was impressed with this original idea from Brainseed Factory.
When I first became aware of this game and discovered that it contained word puzzles I was sold on wanting it.
Any game that use grammar and wordsmithery (yes that’s a real word) in order to progress is a winner in my book.
You start out with a truck full of letters being tipped over a cliff and the letter O rolls out, it’s this letter that starts you on your adventure. You then roll to your right and soon discover another letter, this time it’s an E and this becomes the body and the O is obviously your head. Hopping along further you pick up the letter H which are your legs and finally you pick up an R which is your arm. Now the clever amongst you will have realised that the letters that make up the body spell out HERO, which is what you are in the game.
You have to construct words to solve puzzles which affect the environment and allow you to progress. Most of them are quite easy to work out but there are a few that require some thought. The picture below shows a good example of the cleverness of the level design.
As you can see there is a big body of water blocking the way of the Hero, to progress you have to swing on the letter D and then the word RAIN becomes DRAIN and the water drains away and allows you to move on, clever huh ?
The game is littered with puzzles like this and I got a real sense of satisfaction from working them out. Such is the versatility of the English language, there are a few puzzles that have more than one solution.
Shown below is another example of using words to aid your Hero in his quest, by spelling out the word COVER you are rewarded with exactly that, this shield is useful in situations where sentry guns are present and without the shield you are blocked from passing and will inevitably die.
Along with the word puzzles there is also some standard platform game fodder to overcome. This consists of making jumps and climbing to areas and also using various lifts and swings.
The look and feel of Typoman is quite dark and the graphics and haunting soundtrack set the scene of a dystopian world threatened by evil very very well. The ‘baddies’ in the world are made up of words such as ‘evil’ and ‘fear’ and as previously stated you have the ‘words’ at your disposal to overcome them. There are a few levels where ‘Fear’ injects you with a hypodermic needle and the effects of this send the screen all swirly and disorientate you, you have to counter the effects of this injection before the effects ultimately result in your death.
The longevity of Typoman is the only minus I can see. With the Prologue and just 3 playable chapters, it’s a very short game that can be completed in just 2-3 hours. The scope for more chapters is there, I’m not sure why it was released with such little content. There are, scattered throughout the levels, collectibles in the form of quotations to obtain and when you finish the game (I haven’t yet, still working out the final boss) there are two mini games that unlock.
In summary, Typoman Revised was a joy to play but a bit too short.
