With the impending release of the new blockbuster game from Epic Studios and The Coalition, Gears of War 4, I decided to dust off the Gears of war Ultimate Collection on Xbox One. Having played and loved the Gears of War franchise on the Xbox 360 I felt I needed to play through the previous 3 games to refresh the Gears of War story in my mind.

However, once I started playing the first campaign in Gears 1 I was reminded how in depth and interesting the story of the Gears of War world.

“The world of Sera was once a peaceful place but few, if any, are alive who remember such days. 79 long years of civil war over the planet’s premier fuel source, Imulsion, had left humanity battered and bruised – but also battle-hardened. Shortly after conflict ended, a new and more terrible one began, originating from the very bowels of the planet.
Emergence Day, they called it. The day the Locust broke through the soil, shattering communications and massacring billions. Soon only the cities on the hardened crust of Jacinto Plateau remained, and the coalition of Ordered Governments was forced to make a terrible decision – scorching the earth to keep the Locust from its door.
14 years on a hero emerges who might prove humanity’s saviour. You are Marcus Fenix, a disgraced war hero freed from prison to lead the COG’s Delta Squad in a fateful last-gasp rear guard against the unrelenting Locust. Welcome to war in a mad world…

Our story begins fourteen years after Emergence Day (E-Day), Marcus Fenix, a former COG soldier, is reinstated into the military after spending four years in prison for abandoning his military post in order to make a vain attempt to save his father, Adam Fenix. Dominic “Dom” Santiago, Marcus’ best friend and fellow COG, successfully extracts Fenix from the prison, and takes him to meet Delta Squad. The group seeks to obtain the “resonator”, a device that will map “The Hollow”, the underground caverns which the Locust inhabit and later deploy the “Lightmass Bomb”, which will destroy the heart of the Locust forces inside the Hollow. Fenix and his allies recover the device, but suffer multiple casualties in the process including Anthony Carmine (who is shot by a sniper) and Squad leader Kim (who is personally executed by the locust General RAAM in an ambush). Fleeing RAAM’s forces, Fenix leads the remaining soldiers through the ruins of Ephyra to claim a “Junker” APC, drive to a mining facility, and finally into the planet’s depths.

Delta Squad successfully detonates the resonator, but the device fails to map enough of the tunnel network. Fortunately, they discover a larger map of the network that originates from Fenix’s old home, specifically his father’s laboratory. The group ventures to the Fenix estate at East Barricade Academy, where Fenix originally attempted to rescue his father. When they arrive, Delta encounters heavy Locust resistance. After collecting the data, the group fights their way past Locust forces and boards a train carrying the Lightmass Bomb. Fenix and Santiago battle their way through the train, and finally are able to defeat General RAAM, before uploading the data. Fully activated, the Lightmass Bomb launches into the Hollow, and eradicates the Locust tunnel networks. In the game’s final sequence, Hoffman delivers a victory speech as the tunnels collapse and explode, whereupon the voice of the Locust Queen promises that the Locust will continue to fight onward, despite their losses, and that their vengeance will be swift.

“With the Locust’s subterranean tunnels mapped and the lightmass bomb detonated, COG forces struck a major blow against the insect-like Locust. Now, as imulsion seeps into the air, causing an incurable condition called Rust Lung in the Seran populace, they must prepare for the beginning of the end.
Six months on and the Locust have returned, sinking cities near Jacinto, backing the COG into a corner.
For Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, the war has been a deeply personal one. Marcus’ father Adam was a victim of an early Locust raid, and Dom frantically searches for his wife. Their journey here will leave deep scars, and raise new questions that will spur them onward as the Serans contemplate the ultimate sacrifice…

As Gears of War 2 begins, the COG army is mobilizing to send forces into the depths of Sera to assault the Locust directly. The COG deploy several units into the Locust Tunnels, known as ‘The Hollow’, despite sustaining heavy casualties. Delta Squad, consisting of Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Benjamin Carmine and later Augustus Cole and Damon Baird, continues to search the Hollow and discovers that the Locust are using a giant Riftworm to sink the human occupied cities. The Locust plan to destroy the rock structures at the outskirts of Jacinto, the last major Human city, in hopes of sinking it into the ground.

Delta Squad kills the Riftworm before it can sink Jacinto and returns to the surface. They are ordered to investigate a nearby abandoned COG outpost where they encounter experimented creatures of unknown origin and learn of a back door entrance to the Hollow in the nearby Kadar Mountains. They find prisoner cages and Dom convinces Marcus that Maria (Dom’s wife) must be inside one of them. They manage to find her, but the Locust imprisonment and torture has left her severely disfigured and traumatized, unable to communicate. Faced with the nigh-vegetative state Maria is in, Dom tearfully chooses to euthanize her. Marcus and Dom then charge into the Locust stronghold.

Inside, Delta Squad discovers the Locust Horde is locked in a civil war against the “Lambent,” or a group of Locust who have been exposed to Imulsion. They decide to destroy both the Locust and Lambent forces by detonating a bomb under Jacinto, which will sink the city and flood the Locust tunnels. Marcus and Dom battle their way through the Locust tunnels, while Cole and Baird use a helicopter to transport a bomb into the cavern. A Lambent Brumak destroys the bomb before it can be detonated. Marcus improvises by using a satellite targeting solution to bombard the Brumak with an orbital laser, which causes it to violently explode. Jacinto begins to sink and sea-water floods into the sinkhole, destroying the remaining Locust forces. As the COG forces and civilians evacuate, a voiceover of the Locust Queen talks about unintended legacies. After the credits, a last voice over of Adam Fenix is heard, a radio transmission of a call for help, and a cry of desperation, revealing he is still alive.

“18 months have passed since the loss of Jacinto, the last human stronghold. The COG has been disbanded and surviving Serans have retreated to the island of Vectes, where the brave souls of Delta Squad have holed up in a converted aircraft carrier dubbed Raven’s Nest. Above and below the surface of Sera a new war rages – this time fought between insurgent COG remnants, the Locust, and a new and terrible threat. Infected by imulsion, Locust are becoming possessed and changing into new Lambent forms, hell-bent on destruction.
Amidst the chaos, word reaches Marcus that his father, Adam Fenix, may in fact be alive – and that, with him rescued, a way to win the war may just reveal itself. And so, with the fates of all three races hanging in the balance, the final battle begins…

Gears of War 3 begins as Chairman Prescott unexpectedly arrives on the Sovereign. Prescott informs Marcus Fenix he needs to relay important information to the ship’s senior officer, Captain Michaelson. The Lambent then launch a surprise attack on the ship, which leaves Michaelson dead and Prescott mortally wounded. Before dying, Prescott gives Marcus an encryption to the disc that Colonel Hoffman has and reveals that his father, Adam Fenix, is still alive but captive on Azura, a secret COG base. Marcus, Dom, Cole, and Baird fight their way to the Anvil Gate Fortress, where Hoffman possesses the necessary equipment to decrypt Prescott’s disc. Upon arriving at Anvil Gate, Marcus and his comrades assist Hoffman’s soldiers in repelling a combined Lambent and Locust assault.

Upon further analysis of the disc’s content, Marcus learns that Azura is protected by man-made hurricane generators, making the island only accessible by submarine. Marcus and his comrades, joined by old friend Dizzy Wallin, successfully find a submarine but require Imulsion to fuel it. Dom suggests they first venture to an abandoned town called Mercy, where they discover that humans are becoming Lambent. During extraction, the Gears are nearly overrun by Locust and Lambent; Dom sacrifices himself to create an explosion that wipes out the hostile forces. Demoralized, they are forced to continue their search for fuel in the city of Char after their truck runs out of fuel. The ruined city is inhabited by several Stranded civilians who are led by Griffin. Despite his dislike for the COG and Gears, Griffin reluctantly tasks Marcus to recover a supply of Imulsion. After acquiring the fuel they are attacked by the Locust Horde, led by Queen Myrrah. Griffin’s forces sustain heavy casualties in the ensuing battle, but the Gears are ultimately able to escape and reach the shipyards where they have to fight the Locust as they repair and fuel their submarine.

Marcus’ group finally arrives at Azura, discovering that it is a sanctuary and resort for Sera’s most elite and powerful individuals. Adam contacts the Gears and reveals he is being held captive atop Azura’s main hotel tower. Marcus’s group battles through waves of hostiles before finding his father. Adam quickly explains that he has created a device capable of eradicating all Lambent and Locust life forms on Sera. Adam had worked with Myrrah before to try to tune the wave so that only Lambent would be affected, but with the Imulsion now infecting humans, Adam ran out of time, infuriating Myrrah. Marcus and his comrades defend Adam from the Locust and Lambent, and from an attack by Myrrah. Adam reveals that he had to infect himself with Lambent cells in order to test his machine. As the machine begins to pulsate with energy, Adam bids his son farewell before the device kills him. Myrrah rises from the rubble and begins insulting Adam. Marcus fatally stabs Myrrah with Dom’s commando knife. Shortly afterwards, the machine emits a blue wave of energy that sweeps across Sera, destroying the Locust, Lambent, and the Imulsion. The scene transitions back to Marcus, who is mournfully wondering what humanity has left. He is comforted by Anya, who assures Marcus that the sacrifices of Adam, Dom, and their comrades have guaranteed humanity a future.

So thats the story so far…pretty good in my opinion. I am really looking forward to Gears of War 4 being released as is every Gears of War fan. So what do we know about the newest addition to the Gears franchise? Well,we know the story centers around a new character, J.D Fenix (son of Marcus Fenix and Anya Stroud), and his friends Del Walker and Kait Diaz who have to deal with a new threat to humanities survival.

Gears of War 4 will run at 30 frames per second in its single player modes, and 60 in its multiplayer modes, both at 1080p. The game will utilize a dynamic scaling system to maintain a consistent frame rate, under which the resolution will be automatically decreased and upscaled back to 1080p during more intensive scenes.

The Coalition have released the first 20 mins of gameplay for Gears of War 4. I urge you to watch the video below it genuinely looks fantastic.

Gears of War 4 is released on Xbox one and PC worldwide on the 11th of October 2016.
