Dead Alliance is a first person shooter with a twist. The twist is that you’re in a world that is occupied by Zombies, Zombies which you can take control of to use to your advantage and kill other players. Which when it comes off is rather satisfying, it just tends to be too easy for them to be shot by the other people, so I found that kills with this was at a minimum. I think the overall thought behind the game is brilliant, being able to use Zombies as a weapon yourself to help your team is something I haven’t seen to this degree and it is brilliant, but saying that there is a lot that lets the game down and I will go into this in detail below.
When I watched a few videos, trailers and saw the screenshots and found out what Dead Alliance was all about, I was very intrigued. Again, this game is showing that the Zombie culture is going strong, especially in games. I have to admit, I was very excited to play this game and couldn’t wait to get to try it. That didn’t take long as I participated in the beta and when I started playing it I was very disheartened by what I was playing.
But, I didn’t let it get to me, it’s only the beta and things can be improved upon. Well, here we are at the full release. My excitement has started to grow again, this is the full game with everything in for me to enjoy. I kick start a quick match and I’m into Team Deathmatch. To my horror, nothing had changed from the beta, the game felt wooden, it felt as though it was a chore to play, there was no smoothness in it and people were stuttering around everywhere. I’m not sure whether this is server based or P2P, if it’s server based, then the developers need to have a look at the servers they’re using. I know this wasn’t going to be on the scale or Battlefield 1 or Call of Duty but the servers are what run the game and if the gameplay is stuttering around like this then something needs to be looked at. If they are using P2P, then who uses that these days? Who puts gamers through that heartache of playing against someone with Tesco everyday value internet? No one! and no one should have to suffer that awful fate.
When playing a match there were several issues that I encountered, one being the stuttering people jumping about the map, the other was the mechanics of the game. I’ve mentioned above about the game feeling wooden and a struggle, it feels as though your dragging your feet and have a ball and chain attached. The animations look as though there struggling and there were parts on certain maps where I struggled to jump over ledges no higher than my toe knuckles…. When reloading my weapon it felt as though the animation was ahead of the actual reload as there were times when the animation would finish but the gun wouldn’t shoot and I ended up dying by other people or attacked by the Z’s roaming the maps.
I have to admit as well that the game doesn’t look that good either, it looks like a PS3 launch game/end of life PS2 game. In this day and age with the technology that we have when we have Battlefield, Horizon Zero Dawn, Hellblade and more looking as good as they do, there is no excuse for sub level graphics like this. There doesn’t seem to be much polish to the game and it does look rough around the edges.
I went to the single player to see if this could redeem the game in any way and all the single player is, is a glorified horde mode. There is a story within it which as far as I’m aware is repeated every game. What you’re doing is an experiment to see how long you last, which you manage to find out at some point through the match when the guy speaking over the headset abandons you. Before starting the game you have the option of going solo or playing with bots. I chose the solo mode to see how difficult it could be, and each time I played I managed to get to about round 10. It does start getting a lot when getting to the further rounds, especially being on your own. When you have bots with you, it’s not so bad as you can cover more areas, but the when you have to stay within the protective bubble until it moves and you have several areas to try and cover, it can get a bit much for one person, but I guess that’s the challenge that’s set out for you.

There is an option to customise and unlock stuff but this is pretty standard to most FPSs and isn’t too much in depth.
I have to admit that I thought that this would be a fun game to play, from the first time I saw it I was hooked on it, I couldn’t wait to play, but it’s sluggishness and wooden mechanics means it drags its feet and I really found it hard to enjoy any of the matches that I was playing. Fingers crossed this is something that can be looked into for updates, but as it stands I can’t really recommend it.
